Why ‘Poor Thing’?

The reason for the title is a bit of a complicated one. Technically the song ‘Poor Thing’ is about the plight of Lucy, and yet it applies so well to Mrs. Lovett. Her love for Sweeney becomes pitiful and he can never return it, and in the end it is used against her as a final vengeance to Lucy herself. Also, the song Poor Thing is sung by Mrs. Lovett as well as the small reprisal of it in the final scene. It just fits so well, as despite all her dreams and desires nothing Mrs. Lovett hopes for can ever possibly come true.
