Mission

What has Miroku set out to do? If you've ever pondered the answer to this question look no farther! Say no more!

Miroku's mission in life is simply put to kill Naraku and get rid of his kazaana forever or failing that to produce an heir who will kill Naraku after he dies.

Naturally to accomplish either of these missions is easier said then done. Miroku has being trying to defeat Naraku for a long time (presumably since he finished his training as a monk) however before he meets up with Inuyasha he can't even find a clue to his whereabouts. Despite this, he does seem to know about the Shikon Jewel, though not the attachment that Naraku has to it. This has always led me to believe that Miroku was probably not actively pursuing Naraku and rather focussing on part two of his mission. It seems strange that only after joining Inuyasha and company Miroku is able to locate Naraku.

Miroku assumes once Naraku is destroyed the kazaana in his hand will disappear forever allowing him to finally settle down and lead a normal life. As far as I know it has never been confirmed by Naraku or anyone really, that after Naraku dies the kazaana will be removed. Miroku is starts as a part of Inuyasha's group so that he can defeat Naraku and hopefully lift his curse.

If Miroku is unable to destroy Naraku he has a different mission, he has to produce an heir who will take on his quest and kill Naraku. This quest appears to be even MORE difficult then defeating Naraku! Most girls brush him off laughing and say "You must be joking..." and the ones that agree usually end up being crazy angry demons with sharp fangs and claws. Miroku later on half accomplishes this mission... that is to say Sango agrees to bear his child, after they defeat Naraku together. Nothing like technicalities.
